Recent advances in sequence development (e.g., MP2RAGE) and ultra-high field MRI (e.g., 7T) have allowed for the collection of higher-resolution data (e.g. 0.22 x 0.22 mm2 in-plane (Kerchner, 2012)), with higher signal-to-noise ratio and reduced partial volume effects (Kerchner, 2012; Parekh, 2015; Berron, 2017). There are tradeoffs to these advances such as longer scan time and limited access to 7T scanners. The improved resolution may still be insufficient for visualizing features (e.g. cellular identification) necessary for identifying boundaries between adjacent subfields (e.g. CA1 from CA2) (Wisse, 2017).
The HSG plans to restart the Acquisition Working Group to perform a literature review of 1) the latest high/ultrahigh resolution in-vivo scanning (at different field strengths using different contrasts) of the hippocampus and surrounding medial temporal lobe, and 2) new methods and tools that have been applied to these images in the literature to assess their potential for the improved segmentation of the subfields.
The working group will meet via organized zoom calls to discuss our goals, scopes, and tasks. A planned outcome of the working group is a manuscript reporting the results of the above reviews.
